| DESTINATION PROFILE: TERRIFIC TASSIE |
|
Australia’s island state offers something for everyone Hilary Genders
 |
Freycinet National Park Photo: Tourism Tasmania | | In April THNWest sat down with Daryl Hudson, regional manager, North America, Tourism Tasmania to discuss the incredible variety Australia’s unique island state offers to Canadian travellers. It was no small feat to steal a few minutes of Hudson’s time at the Aussie Expo held at Science World: the Tourism Tasmania table was hopping all day, as Australia’s smallest state was one of the biggest draws with Vancouverites visiting the new Planet Oz exhibit. “Today’s been a fantastic day,” Hudson said. “We’ve been speaking to a lot of folks who were already planning a trip to Australia, and are now inquiring about Tasmania, about adding it on.”Which isn’t all that surprising. For while “Tassie” might not be the first place the average consumer thinks of when considering a visit Down Under, those who do go are richly rewarded. Read on to learn more about Terrific Tassie.

New schedule means more convenient rail connection to Kamloops
Skiers and snowboarders visiting Sun Peaks Resort this winter will be able to ride the rails to their ski vacation with VIA Rail Canada. Effective December 2, 2008, VIA Rail is making schedule changes that will allow passengers travelling to and from Vancouver or Jasper to arrive in Kamloops late evening or early morning and then catch a shuttle to Sun Peaks Resort. “In the past, the train arrived in Kamloops in the middle of the night, making it difficult for our Sun Peaks guests,” says Christopher Nicolson, president of Tourism Sun Peaks. “So we are extremely excited about these schedule changes by VIA Rail as they will give our guests an additional transportation option for the ski holiday.”
