COQUIHALLA RE-OPENED
Canadian Press
Traffic is moving once again on the Coquihalla Highway, the main east-west link between the Lower Mainland and Interior of B.C. The route reopened just before 8 a.m., eight days after it was closed by an avalanche between Hope and Merritt. Further avalanches and the extreme risk of more slides kept crews from clearing as much as three metres of snow. Helicopters finally managed to drop explosives earlier this week, bringing down the most dangerous slabs of snow and allowing road crews to return to work in safety. During the closure, motorists and truckers were forced to use the slower Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon. The shutdown of Highway 5 was the longest closure of the toll route since it was completed in 1986.
