WESTJET SHRINKS
WestJet announces it will fly smaller planes into B.C. during runway construction
WestJet Airlines Inc. said it will fly smaller, propeller-powered planes rather than its usual Boeing jets into Prince George, B.C., while construction is underway at the city's airport. The Calgary-based discount carrier says it will lease Dash-8 planes between Sept. 2 and Sept. 30 instead of using its Boeing 737s. The main runway at the Prince George airport is being extended and it will not be long enough to accommodate the bigger planes during construction. WestJet executive vice-president Bob Cummings says it's “far from an ideal situation,” but leasing the smaller planes was a better choice than discontinuing service to Prince George altogether.
